This window contains information about the 'Substrates' data set. Please note that the substrate data are plotted on top of a bathymetry base map (details available in metadata for the base map). Colors on the legend may not match the map exactly because the substrate layer is partly transparent in order to show more detail.
Data sourced from the 2002 Anchor Environmental Report.
ESRI shapefile (polygons)
These maps are designed to show the extent and location of different types of substrate along and out from the shoreline. Different color areas in the intertidal and nearshore marine area represent general categories of the substrates present.
One important item to consider about the substrate data is that it comes from two separate studies that were combined into the Marine Resources of Whatcom County report. The data from the area north of Pt. Whitehorn is from a DOE study from 1992 and the data from the area south of Pt. Whitehorn is from a DNR study from 1995. The data from the DNR study appears to be more complete and more detailed.
GENERAL MAP INFORMATION: Map Projection is UTM NAD 27 Zone 10. Maps Created By Applied GIS Services (W.Lynch-C.Dolphin), January 2002. Data is complete only for Whatcom County Waters- refer to original data sources for other counties.
